Connecting the Dots: the path to your personal brand

Steve Jobs said, “you can’t connect the dots until you look backwards.”

This can be related to a number of important life lessons. To me, it reinforces the importance of personal branding.

Personal branding is a reflective experience. One where you evaluate your strengths and weakness, and also look back on your career to date. What are the commonalities? If you’ve worked at a number of jobs, in a number of industries or sectors, are there common threads?

Perhaps you’ve always worked in customer facing roles. Maybe you’ve jumped at opportunities that allowed you to mentor others. Whatever it may be, it’s important to take the time to look back on your career, however short or long it may be, and connect the dots.

What you learn could propel you forward. Maybe you understand that you’ve always worked in customer service and have the knowledge to begin a consultancy business around that experience. If you realized that all of the jobs you’ve gone after been with new businesses getting off the ground, you can begin to position yourself as someone who specializes in doing that.

Take the time to reflect. You never know what you may learn. You never know where that learning may take you.
