Personal branding is about clarifying your goals, highlighting your strengths and consciously striving to have one support the other. It’s about knowing your value and being in the driver’s seat of your career.
When you’re clear with yourself and others about what you do best and for whom, people begin to think of you for roles and projects that align. This is why people talk about having a great LinkedIn profile. The idea being that if you have a clear message stating the unique value you bring to a job and industry, and then back it up with your experience, people can see you in the role they’re looking to fill and are more likely to contact you directly.
The added benefit of being in the driver’s seat is that when an opportunity comes your way, the decision to pursue it or not can be made very quickly. If you’re waffling through your career without a framework to make decisions even an opportunity can cause stress.
On the other hand, if you’ve got a personal brand you’ll know right away if something is in line with it or not. No more stressing about saying yes or no. If you say no, you’ll know why and can trust that you’ve made the right decision. Time to move on.
