How to Network Without Having to Network
Apr 20, 2022
When it comes to networking, many people believe that the best way to meet new people and further their career is by attending events, business lunches or conferences, or going on informational interviews.
These forms of networking can be very effective, but they aren't always enjoyable. Just say the word networking and watch people cringe!
There is another way to network that is often overlooked: volunteering.
Volunteering Is the Best Form of Networking. Hear me out.
Volunteering not only allows you to give back to your community, but it also provides you with an opportunity to meet new people and learn new skills.
Volunteering is a great way to meet like-minded individuals and make meaningful connections. Which is what networking is all about, right?
I wrote about my experience volunteering with the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC) and how the experience changed the game of networking and opened my eyes to a new and better way for me to do it. I gave it the name: networking by providing value because that's what it is! Although you're giving so much of yourself, ultimately you get so much in return.
Volunteering is the best form of networking because it allows you to meet new people and build relationships with the people you're supporting or volunteering with. While you're volunteering, you're showing people what you're capable of – you're building your personal brand!
So if you're looking for a way to network, volunteering is the best way to go!
