Personal branding. We’ve all heard of it. We’ve all read at least one of the thousands of articles about it. We all have one. But why do you develop it? And, how exactly does it help your career?
Let me tell you a little story. My story…
Five years ago I was a communications advisor at one of the largest non-profits in Canada. I worked hard, putting in super long hours and churning out lots of quality work. When it became available, I applied for the communications manager job. I got a no - pretty quick. Not long after, a new VP joined the organization and told me, you do great work - but no one knows who you are.
You see, I thought that if I worked hard and produced great work that it would speak for itself, and my career would take off.
From the time I got that feedback (which was totally on point), I worked with my new boss to develop my personal brand. It took time (not as long as you’d think) but it was one of the biggest things I’ve done for my personal and professional development.
Guess what? It worked! Months later I was offered a leadership role which became a stepping stone to the coveted communications manager role. Finally!
But, I didn’t stop there.
I’ve since relied on my personal brand when leading major projects, and when coming back to work after maternity leave and having a new role created for me.
When I left that job to become an entrepreneur, I exercised my personal brand even more. While the steps may be different, the same principles apply to both entrepreneurs and those employed at a company.
I’ve decided to use my experience developing my personal brand, as well as the experience supporting a CEO’s personal brand, to help others do the same. There are so many articles and books out there that tell you how important personal branding is. (Trust me, I’ve read almost all of them!) What doesn’t exist is someone to show you how and give you objective feedback as you develop your brand.
I’ve seen how personal branding worked for myself, and I’ve seen it work well for so many others! A personal brand can be the difference your career needs. Developing my personal brand catapulted my career to places that hard work alone was never going to.
So, three cheers for personal branding! The kind that gets us results and celebrates what makes us unique, not the kind that coerces us into being someone we’re not.
I’d love to help you as you develop your brand so you do it in a way that creates results. Send me a message and let's chat about how!
